China launched its first 10,000-tonne destroyer in Shanghai on Wednesday.
The launching ceremony for the domestically developped destroyer was held at the Jiangnan Shipyard of the China State Shipbuilding Corp.
The Chinese Navy stated that the destroyer, with a full displacement of 10,000 tonnes, was equipped with new air defence, missile defence, and anti-ship and anti-submarine weapons, but provided no detailed information.
Although the People's Liberation Army Navy did not state which class the new destroyer belonged to, it is believed to be the Type 055 class.
According to a report by Jane’s, a UK publishing company specialising in military, the Type 055 was about 180 metres long and 19 metres wide, much larger than the Navy’s current main destroyer, the 7,200-tonne Type 052D (157 metres long and 17 metres wide).
A Chinese source told Russian military website Military-Industrial Courier that there would be 12 Type 055 destroyers. The website also said that the cost of a Type 055 destroyer was estimated to be between US$737 million and US$885 million.
Zhang Junshe, a senior researcher at the PLA Naval Military Studies Research Institute, said the Type 055 would significantly improve the Navy's long-range operational capability.
